ABNORMAL RESPIRATIONS
Abnormal Respirations
Apnea
• Cessation of breathing
Bradypnea
• Decreased Respiratory rate of less than 12 breaths/min with regular respiratory rhythm
Tachypnea
• Rapid or Increased Respiratory rate of more than 40 breaths/min with regular respiratory Rhythm
Dyspnea
• Difficulty in Breathing or Shortness of Breath
Hypoventilation
• It is an abnormally low respiration with decreased depth of ventilation where the breathing is too shallow and too slow to meet the metabolic needs of the body which can increase the Carbon dioxide levels in blood
Hyperventilation
• It is a rapid deep breathing where the breathing is faster & deeper that can cause breathlessness & decrease Carbon dioxide in the blood
Cheyne - Stokes respiration
• Respiratory rate & depth is Irregular characterized by alternate periods of apnea & hyperventilation. Respiratory cycles begins with slow & shallow breaths that gradually increase to
abnormal depth & rate. The pattern then reverses leading to slow shallow breaths and a period of Apnea then resuming of Respirations.
Kussmaul Respiration
• These are respirations that are abnormally rapid & deep. Kussmaul respirations happen when the body tries to breathe Quickly & faster to remove carbon dioxide, an acid, from the body. It is commonly seen in Diabetic ketoacidosis.
Biot’s Respiration
• Irregular Respirations vary in depth & are Interrupted by a periods of Apnea. It is also called as ataxic breathing
Apneustic breathing
. Apneustic breathing is characterized by regular deep inspirations with an inspiratory pause followed by inadequate expiration. It is caused due to Injury to the brain stem from a trauma or stroke
